Why the correct operator training for Pallet Trucks and Low Level Order Pickers is so important

Pedestrian Pallet Trucks (PPT) and Low Level Order Pickers (LLOP) are essential tools in many warehouses and distribution centres. But their effective and safe use hinges on the correct operator training. So why is comprehensive training so crucial for these machine types?

Reducing risks of workplace transport incidents

While Pallets Trucks and Low Level Order Pickers (LLOP) may seem straightforward, they can pose potential risks if operated incorrectly. As highlighted by this incident, where a lack of pallet truck training contributed to an incident with life changing consequences.

When using Pallet Trucks or LLOPs, there are risks to the operator. For example, incorrect mounting and dismounting, or inappropriate posture could lead to musculoskeletal injuries.

In addition, failure to understand correct the truck’s controls and operating best practices could also risk putting others in danger. As well as increasing the possibility of damage to equipment, stock, and infrastructure. This can cause unplanned costs for maintenance and unexpected downtime.

If operators are not correctly trained and an incident occurs, this can be disruptive to operations. Beyond this, there is the human cost of workers being injured. And the financial costs should this result in an investigation, prosecution, or fine.

Appropriate training ensures operators understand the specific machine type they are using. It also provides an overview of standard safety practices and regulations. Alongside an understanding of how to manage loads, travel, and turn.

The correct training will set a standard for operator behaviour. And instil confidence alongside competence. Helping to minimise the likelihood of workplace incidents and injuries.

Elevating operational efficiency

Correctly trained warehouse operators help support smooth, efficient operations. Training helps operators master the techniques needed for the specific machine type. Even if the operator is skilled on another type of materials handling equipment (MHE).

For instance, during operator training they will learn how to work using the correct posture, and how to manoeuvre the tiller or controls. Confident operation helps operators handle tasks more quickly and accurately, boosting productivity.

Of course, operating safely goes hand in hand with efficiency. Incidents can lead to damage, injury, and downtime.

Supporting MHE operation compliance

Safety should be a priority for warehouses and supply chain operations. Not least because it is required for compliance with health and safety guidance.

The correct training is a key part of the safety equation in materials handling. It complements other safety measures, like equipment maintenance, and the use of the required personal protective equipment (PPE).

A holistic approach to safety is needed to help reduce workplace accidents, and to support regulatory compliance.

New RTITB operator training videos

To support Instructors and Trainers, RTITB has introduced new operator training videos. These aid correct Pallet Truck operator training and Low Level Order Picker (LLOP) operator training.

The new RTITB training videos are available at the RTITB Shop online. They are a valuable resource to help companies achieve productivity and risk reduction goals, while helping protect employees. They help ensure that operators are well-prepared to use equipment safely and effectively.

Each of the visual training aids are available in a handy USB format. Both contain 10 engaging video clips.

The high-quality videos enable Instructors to provide real-time explanations and insights of what is shown. It helps uphold consistent training quality. And means training sessions can be customised to the needs of operators.
