HOW DOES A LGV DRIVER EPA WORK?

Every apprenticeship has an End-Point Assessment (EPA) plan which sets out the specific assessment Gateway requirements for that standard, which must be met before an apprentice can take an EPA.

The Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Driver (ST0257) Level 2 EPA consists of two parts, a written test and a practical test:

    1. Knowledge and Behaviours Test. The apprentice will have a total of 60 minutes to answer 20 short answer and two scenario questions. Usually delivered via our online EPA system, the test has a pass mark of 70% and distinction mark of 90%.
    2. Practical Test for Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Driver C + E (ST0257) Level 2 apprentices. This takes place in a lorry (LGV / HGV) and involves the apprentice carrying out normal duties and using equipment. The driver apprentice has 60 minutes to complete a series of actions that will show our RTITB assessor that they have the skills set out in the apprenticeship standard.

Both parts can be conducted on the same day, or on separate days, either in the workplace or at a suitable training centre.

THE ASSESSMENT PLAN

This standard is currently being assessed against three different versions of the assessment plan. The assessment plan to be selected is determined by the apprentice’s on-programme start date. The correct assessment plan for the Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Driver Level 2 is as follows:

  • Apprentices who started their apprenticeship on or after 26 June 2023 will be assessed against IfATE v1.4 ( no change to assessment – Funding Band change)
  • Apprentices who started their apprenticeship between 6 August 2021 and 25 June 2023 will be assessed against IfATE v1.3 / AP04
  • Apprentices who started their apprenticeship before 6 August 2021 will be assessed against IfATE v1.1 / AP03, unless the apprentice, employer and training provider request for the learner to move to IfATE v1.3 / AP04

During the programme, the candidate completes all of their licence acquisition tasks to get qualified to drive (which can be sooner than the 13 months), but will also complete all additional training required to reach the level 2 apprenticeship standard.

After the 13 month (or more) period, the training provider will work with the employer to decide when the apprentice is ready for end point assessment with a suitable EPA Organisation (such as RTITB in this case).

WHAT IS THE LARGE GOODS VEHICLE (LGV) DRIVER C + E APPRENTICESHIP LEVEL 2?

The Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Driver C + E Apprenticeship level 2 is suitable for anyone interested in driving a lorry / LGV / HGV professionally. It lasts for a minimum of 13 months.

The Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Driver C + E Apprenticeship course enables an apprentice to achieve a category C + E licence with the full legal entitlement to drive professionally while meeting all the requirements of the Institute for Apprenticeships and Technical Education standards.

A training provider or College will support the apprentice through the whole apprenticeship journey. The training provider / College will also work closely with employer to develop a training plan for the apprentice that covers the knowledge, skills and behaviours outlined in the standards. They will also participate in milestone meetings and provide feedback to the apprentice and employer.

RTITB is a registered End-Point Assessment Organisation (EPAO) and is recognised by Government regulator Ofqual to deliver EPAs for Large Goods Vehicle (LGV) Driver C + E (ST0257 v1.1) Level 2.
