Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) has confirmed upcoming reforms to the Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (Driver CPC) set to take effect on 3rd December 2024.
Key changes include the introduction of a National Driver CPC (N-DCPC), which will authorise drivers to operate lorries, buses, and coaches within the UK under updated training guidelines.
The new change will allow greater flexibility in training, offering drivers the option to complete courses in blocks of 3.5 hours instead of the current 7-hour requirement. However, the traditional 7-hour sessions remain an option for those who prefer it. In addition, drivers will be able to complete up to 12 hours of their required 35 hours of training through eLearning. The eLearning introduction has been made available for both the National and International Driver CPC categories.
For those pursuing an International Driver CPC, courses must continue to be completed within 7 hours.
Further changes are scheduled to help drivers quickly reinstate their Driver CPC qualification if it expires. This measure is set to come into effect on 1st February 2025, providing an expedited pathway back to driving for eligible individuals.
The Department for Transport (DfT) has also indicated that it will continue to gather feedback regarding the potential introduction of a periodic test as part of the Driver CPC requirements. However, no decision has been reached on this measure.
As these reforms approach, drivers and operators are encouraged to stay informed. For questions or support, please get in touch with us here.
